Chavez clamping down on the media

I was reading an article in the Economist yesterday about the repressio of the media in Venezuala under the presidency of Hugo Chavez.

Chavez is turning up the pressure on media organisations that he feels are not fairly reporting th stance of his government. He is not renewing the license of Radio Caracas Television whose owner is an outspoken critic of the President and has prosecuted an evening paper that published a humerous editorial about Chavez's daughter.

The four private owned Tv stations have started to take the hint wih two of them agreeing to tone down their news coverage.

The governemnt is also investing in its own three channels all of which can be described at the least as unlikely to adopt a critical stance against the governement.

All of this has worrying tendancies
