Here is an interesting article from Follow the media which although relating to the US I am sure to this side of the water as well.
They pose the question? If some many young people no longer read newspapers, how come enrollment on journalism courses is on the up?
"the young don’t seem to want to read newspapers, but they do want to work for newspapers. It couldn’t possibly be that there are some young out there who actually do believe in the future of newspapers?"
It is something that I have noticed on my course, how few of the undergraduates actually read newspapers and have a knowledge of current affairs.Yet they all want to be journalists. At the end of this term we have to decide whether to follow the print/online route or the broadcast route and it will be interesting to see the split. In previous years it has bee 60/40 to the former.
Whilst on the subject Kristine Lowe reminds us of a Martin Stabe post which I reproduce here
"Why are journalism students apparently 'closing their eyes to reality'? It is a strange creature, the iPod-teatherd, MySpace-surfing, hip young hack who wants nothing more than to crank out copy on a Remington in time for the evening edition to go off-stone. Yet it seems to be a fairly common species."
