The report overall praises the coverage that business news gets and the resources that are put into its production. However it has identified some lapses.
In particular that some researchers lacked the breathed of knowledge that is required, and that concentrating on consumer issues can lead to one sided coverage of the issue.
One subject that was brought to the attention of the board was the of some presenters to express personal views and preferences about particular consumer products.
Some programmes were given special commendation, the 5 live reporting on weekend business of the Farepac collapse in December 2006 and the World at one's coverage of the Bae scandal.
The issue of concentrating on the consumer side could be argued that the BBC is simply addressing the concerns of its public and the report recognises this. The Farepac story was cited as an example where the story concentrated on the customer reaction rather than the reasons for the collapse.
5 live presenters come in for some criticism, the report saying that various individuals told of"being a fan of Majestic wines,a subscriber to Sky and liked shopping at JJB sports."
There was also a blog which ripped into Windows Vista.
The report makes three recommendations,
- Addressing a lack of knowledge of business news.
- Widening the range of editorial ideas and programming.
- Ensuring compliance with standards of impartiality.
