It's not all pessimistic for newspapers

A couple of really good posts from Howard Owens this week.

On Monday he listed the eight historical mistakes that the newspaper industry has made.

In Brief they are:

They were slow to embrace blogging
  1. They were slow to take on paid advertising
  2. that they didnt invest in search engine facilities
  3. they had a fear of interactivity-as Howard puts it,it was the "view content as something we do and audiences read, take it or leave it.
  4. the contribution made from online activities should have been re invested in online facilities
  5. that online was simply used as an additional portal for the print version
  6. that they missed out on being the community hub

These are all great points that Howard makes, and as he points out they can and are being put right.

Then on Wednesday he continues that optimism from newspapers

  1. Advertising revenue will improve
  2. People will always want reliable news sources
  3. Community is being embraced
  4. That advertising is natural fit for the web
  5. even with cutbacks newspapers have a good pool of reportng resource.
  6. even with declining sales, newspapers still ,out of all the mediums , have a large coverage of readers
  7. that the correct use of video will greatly enhance the delivery of information
  8. above all newspapers especially at a local level command a considerable amount of trust.

Great posting Howard
