The News that the Live Earth concerts literally bombed on Tv on Saturday night comes as no real shock. For the second week running the BBC devoted its schedule to a live concert broadcast form Wembley. The only surprise is that the Diana one got three times as many viewers.(What does that say about our priorities?)
I only watched about half an hour during which I was subjected to Jonathon Ross drivelling on about nothing,a very unfunny Ricky Gervais and a live set from Spinal Tap?,a joke that ran its course over 20 years ago.
It also failed on American Tv,this from Follow the media
"A CNN anchor, Lola Ogunnaike, probably caught the viewing publics mood best. A lot of people think it's a bit hypocritical. I mean, celebrities are some of the least eco-friendly people on the face of the planet. They say that they are interested in the environment, but you also have tours that not only guzzle a huge amount of electricity, but the gas, the tour buses, the entourages, the private jets, that all contributes to, you know, the carbon consciousness that everyone is so obsessed with right now. And they are some of the least eco-friendly people on the planet. So, to have them say, People, you know, recycle,' use electricity -- you know, electricity-efficient light bulbs. People aren't really trying to hear that from Madonna when she's got a fleet of cars sitting in her driveway.
However in terms of new media it broke all the records
And yet TV ratings debacle was a huge success for Microsoft MSN portal that said the show generated more than 10 million streams, surpassing the previous record set by the Live 8 concerts in 2005 that were held to fight poverty.
What does it show.Perhaps that it wasnt that the concerts were a turn off, they were simply a turn off for the old media public, hence the low Tv figures, whereas the youngsters used the new mediums to watch
