PCC changes with the digital age

The Press Complaint's commission produced its annual report yesterday.

Its chairman Sir Anthony Meyer describes 2007 as one of the most important in the organisation's history, the year when its regulations covered not only print an online but being extended to all audio and visual publications on websites.

As a result the organisation had to deal with new sets of compliants.

"Taped conversations being broadcast, children being filmed in schools and vandals being filmed at work"

According to Sir Anthony, the proliferation of multi media and online means that the council has to look at "independent regulation in a different way"

In total the council recieved 4340 compliants, making 1229 rulings and 822 formal investigations. There was an increase of 70% in the number of complaints since 1996.

One column in the Mirror about Madeleine McCann received 445 and for the first time, online articles outnumbered the printed version in submissions
