Turkmenistan joins the internet revolution
Rather off the cuff but nevertheless quite interesting.
The former Soviet state of Turkmenistan has finally joined the Internet revolution.allowing private citizens to have an internet connection.
For those who no little if anything of the country,it had been ruled for 21 by Saparmurat Niyazov, who died of a heart attack in 2006 after implementing a cult of personality on the country.
His successor,Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, has gradually introduced liberal reforms and this move is the latest.Previous access was restricted to the upper echelons of the state.
Given that the connection charge is $42 and it will cost $1 an hour to surf,in a country where the average wage is $200 a year, take up will be slow.
Reports though suggest that up to 20 people per day are being connected and there is a waiting list of 2000.
