As part of our future of journalism module we had a lecture from Mark Comerford yesterday afternoon.
I believe that it was designed as shock tactics to propel the students to immerse themselves in social media.
Mark made the point that when he is hiring people, the first thing he does is google them to check whether they have an online presence. No online presence=no job in Mark's eyes.
It is a subject that crops up many times on this blog. Why don't students blog?.A very sheepish show of hands when the question was asked went in the air along with well we did one last year for the Digital newsroom module.
But it is strange. The no time answer is irrelevant when you add up how much time is spent on Facebook and if journalism students can't think of anything to write about then help us Oh Lord.
Hats off to Mark if it kicks the final year students into action.
