How journalism can learn from the marketing techniques of the army

Over at 10,000 words they have examined what the journalism indusrty could learn from wait for it the American army.

The results may be suprising and the study look at how the army gets its recruits and says that

Media organizations should adopt similar marketing techniques to regain the readers that we so desperately need to survive.


Here is their plan-

1.Interact more with the community-why not give the
swag to people in the community who will be genuinely impressed by the free loot? Many communities complain about lack of interaction with their local papers, so the leftover piles of swag are a perfect way to bridge the gap.


2.Go where young people go-as the army goes around the campuses so should the papers

3.Get a new attitude-in the same way that

steel-faced soldiers march through a mix of smoke and flashing lights while rock music plays in the background

ditch the old gray lady/non-regional diction/holier than thou/old media attitude make reading the news feel a little more hip.
