Take a look at Mindy McAdam's piece on what student journalists should know as they enter the work place.
Her results come from a survey at a recent job fair and the three answers that scored the highest were
1. Diverse skills: multimedia storytelling, including audio and video; Web-first reporting; report/write for both printed publication and online
2. Writing skills: writing on deadline; writing brief and fast, including for Web site; attention to grammar, spelling, clarity, organization
3. Curiosity and enthusiasm
Some other interesting things came out of the survey.Asked why people should still consider journalism in this difficult times the response was that skills of a journalist will always be in demand regardless of format and that journalists forfilled an important role in society.
Finally interestingly it was suggested by many respondants that freelancing was an important way of getting a foot in the door

It does seem that freelancing is going to end up being the way to go, which is tricky since you need contacts to get stories in, and you can't make new ones without work published...which you need contacts to do, creating a vicious circle.
I for one am optimistic at least, I've got a lot out of this course and work placement, I'm in touch with a few people, so if the worst comes to the worst and I don't get even an interview for the countless jobs I expect I'll have to apply for then I will get by.
It's encouraging to see some of what we've been told for the last few years about journalism in a real-world setting, and as much as versatility and multimedia isn't everywhere yet, it soon will be, and we need to be ready.
The crucial point for me though, is the third one, enthusiasm and curiosity, because without them there's little to make people consider you 'journalistic' in the first place.
