Mandelson confirms no bail out for local media

John Slattery is filling in for paternity leave at the Press Gazette and reports that the industry secretary Peter Mandelson has said that the governemnt will not be bailing out the regional paper sector.

Speaking after after a journalists' Charity annual lunch in London,he told the magazine that

I don't think that government subsidies are the right way forward.
But where we can help in maintaining public sector advertising and applying cross media competition rules, we should certainly consider doing so.

Of course some will say as the government is bailing out many other industries why is the media industry seemingly immune to government resources?
