The role of community reporters is leading to the empowerment of the community and having a positive effect on regeneration.
That's the conclusion of a study by Eileen Wattam of the University of Salford who carried out 18 interviews with Community Reporters in key regeneration areas in Greater Manchester.
She found that
1. Community reporters working together and present views and opinions on local environments, services and regeneration programmes
2.use of the community reporting approach to promote community groups and initiatives and counter negative mainstream media reports of areas through promoting the positive aspects of communities.
3. Meeting with and interviewing local politicians was also an area identified as empowering.
However according to Eileen,
the potential of the programme for political empowerment is an area which is not as yet being optimised.
