The Independent is proudly proclaiming that it is bucking the trend of falling newspaper sales
"Daily readership for the paper over the past year has increased by 10.3 per cent on the same period last year, according to figures just released by the National Readership Survey. "
And
"Significantly, the paper's ABC1 readership grew by 15.2 per cent, and now 88.8 per cent of readers of The Independent fall within this social grade. Our percentage of readers under the age of 45 increased and the paper now has the greatest concentration of young readers - 54.9 per cent of total readership - of any quality paper in the daily market. The Independent was also the only paper which registered a rise in female readers."
Meanwhile Media Guardian is reporting that
"The Daily Telegraph has emerged as the leading UK national publication for reporting global conflicts, according to a report commissioned by the British Red Cross.
It provided the most articles on every crisis except Burma and Gaza, according to the study.
However, the report found "there was a clear 'sensationalist' challenge that masked the humanitarian effort" in the British media."
