I tok out a camera onto the streets of Preston this week with the task of filming someone carrying out a task, taking a long shot,a shot of the person and a close up of the action. After unsuccessfully trying to film a man feeding a flock of pigeons,we chose a truck being unloaded.
Take 1 involved filming what I thought was a good sequence shot until realising that the record button had not been pressed and Take 2 saw the heavens open and the wind howl but I managed to get some footgage

b) Zooming into the back of the truck as man puts pallets on trolley.
c) Wheeling the trolley into the building.
d)Closing the van up and operating the controls.
e)Driving the van away.
Andy pointed us towards Vin Ray's book,"The Television News Handbook whih contains ane excellent forward by John Simpson
He says that "it is hard for journalists who tke their words seriously to come to terms with the medium whee the words should complement the pictures rather than dominate them"
In the first chapter Vin lists the qualities that make a good broadcast journalist. He catagorizes them into mental, physical, and craft skills.
- Under mental he lists:
- a sense of curiousity
- enthusiasm and passion
- courage
- radicalism
- a refusal to take no for an answer
- teamwork
- cunning and resourcefulness
- humility
The physical qualities include the voice of authority, stamina and looks.
And under craft
- a way with words-the difference between a good broadcat journalist and an excellent one is the writing.
- a flair for storytelling
- willingness to step aside for pictures and sound
- balancing being engaging and informative.
- originality and a desire to be different.
