According to our lecturer, celebratory culture is not a worthy news story unless it has a hard news angle.I looked around at the expressions on the faces of the other students who no doubt were in general disagreement, and wondered whether she was right.
The basis of this argument came from the feedback on an assignment we had just submitted just before Xmas when we had to choose three separate stories that would be suitable in turn for online, radio and television.
Some of the stories that were handed in were not deemed to be of sufficient hard news worthiness. The example given was that Eddie Murphy had ended his relationship with an ex Spice Girl.(I have to confess that I don't at this time know which Spice Girl is being referred to having missed this story first time around.)
The reasons given, much to the consternation of the other students was that the department taught how to deal with serious news stories. An example of which was the Liz Hurley marriage which disrupted a Cotswold town last weekend and is now having the same effect on tourism in India.
Perhaps this is a generational thing.I was in agreement with Deborah as like her "who is bonking or not bonking a sad has been" does not interest me.
But maybe for the current young generation it is.Serious news is a turn off,how many young people are interested in politics for example which they find generally irrelevant.Perhaps the mass of gossip and conjecture on the Internet is news after all?
