Are we obsessed with dieting?

Until the story of the overturned Norwegian vessel off the Shetlands broke last night, the first editions of the papers appeared obsessed with the discovery of the gene that may explain why some people cannot lose weight.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but stories related to health seem to be dominating the press recently. If it is not a new cure or discovery then it is NHS based.

The Mail and the Express were always famous for leading with the topic but this morning, besides those publications, the Times and the Telegraph both lead, and the Guardian features it heavily.

For those who have not yet read it this is the gist:

Scientists have discovered the first clear genetic link to obesity that is carried by significant numbers of people, according to a study yesterday. One copy of the gene leads to a 1.2kg (2.6lb) weight increase while those with two copies are on average 3kg heavier.
The scientists say it will open up new avenues of research into who is susceptible to obesity and how best to prevent the condition that is the second largest cause of death in the UK
.(Guardian 13.4.07

Of cause let us not distract from this momentous news that may turn the dietary profession on its head but is this really headline news?Or have we become a nation obsessed with the way that we look?
