Entrepreneurial Journalism

A debate is going on in the blogsphere about exactly what an entrepreneurial journalist is or should be.

We are currently doing an online assignment for the Ist year course and this will involve doing amock up of a news site with a main story and linkage. The layout of the site is deemed as important as the story but when we spent a seminar looking at site layouts, little had been thought of the adverts.

The BBC site is held up in our studies as the definitive news web site, but as I pointed out in the seminar, someone has to pay for the content. The entrepreneurial journalist should be aware of the business implications of their work.We do have to know the basics of business and online advertising is integral to this.

Mindy McAdam's online journalism site is discussing this point and one contributor MAC says,

"The sad truth is that we need to learn the basics of business. We need to know about online advertising (it's much different than print or broadcast), we need to know how to monetize content without venturing into ethical quagmires (no pay-to-play blogging, please), and -- most importantly -- we need to understand our own value and seek that value from the folks who (hopefully) pay us."

Howard Owens lists his thoughts on what entrepreneurial means:

  1. Forward thinking
  2. be resourceful
  3. use your initiative
  4. optimism
  5. have a sense of urgency
  6. be goal orientated
  7. not let the bastards grind you down
  8. being realistic
  9. learning from failures
  10. be a self learner
  11. aim for perfection
  12. be kind to others
