In praise of the Worm

Australian television has a novel way of illuminating the current election campaign......A worm.

What you ask is a worm.Well it is an elecronic way of measuring audience reaction to a political debate. Controlled by a panel of viewers in the Tv studio,it reacts to the words of the politician.

However it has aroused much controversy with it being cited as distracting viewers from the main debate.Last night during a debate between the two candidates on Channel 9 it was pulled from the screen. With accusations from both sides(Incumbent Pm John Howard didn't want it as it seems to prefer his Labour rival Kevin Rudd),it transpires that the decision was taken by the national press club of Australia.

According to the Age
it cut the Nine Network's TV feed of the leaders' debate after the channel ratted on a promise not to include the "worm" in the live broadcast.
Nine on Sunday night defied the wishes of Prime Minister John Howard and debate organisers by unearthing its worm, which charts reactions from 90 uncommitted voters.
