It is a year since the Russian reporter Anna Politkovskaya was murdered in Moscow.Anna had upset the Russian government over her reporting of the Chechnya situation.
Yesterday on the streets of Paris, eighteen coffins were lined up representing the 18 journalists who have been killed since Putin came to power in 2000.
Reporters without frontiers reports
“We urge the Russian authorities not to identify convenient suspects in this case,” the press freedom organisation said. “The investigation took a disturbing turn a few weeks ago and we hope that a trial will open as soon as possible. Combatting impunity for the murderers of journalists in Russia continues to be a priority.”

Nigel, I'm interested that you're a mature student studying journalism. I'm currently doing a PhD (Dublin City University, Ireland), my topic loosely being the challenges of age and ageing in media occupations. I'm trying to discover and quantify the extent of the professional generation gap within media occupations. I wonder if you'd like to participate (via email) by completing a questionnaire? I think your experience as a mature student among (I presume) younger students would be very pertinent to what I'm doing. If you'd like to participate, please email me to berna.cox@dcu.ie. Many thanks.
