War is a narcotic

Chris Hedges who has featured on this blog a few times has been talking again about war reporting. This time to a group of students at the University of Maryland.

Chris who is the veteran foreign correspondent for The New York Times described war as

the most powerful narcotic invented by mankind.War controls you; you don't control it.

Perhaps though his most telling quote

Anyone who spends prolonged periods of time in war carries with them hundreds of images and memories that will haunt them forever You wake up in the middle of the night, your heart is racing; you can't go back to sleep. You wake up, and you feel numb."
