Rushbridger-it's essential that we have a local newspaper base

The Guardian's editor Alan Rushbridger comes out in the defence of the local paper.

In the light of the sector struggling in the current economic climate and the BBC's intrusion into the local circuit,Rushbridger argues that

It would be politically unacceptable to leave the BBC, however admirable as a news organisation, as the sole provider of local or regional news. If it is to expand its local coverage it might think of opening serious discussions with local papers about genuine partnership - in both content and technology

I have been in touch with LibDem MP for Lewes Norman Baker over PM Blair's Bilderberg denial last year in the House of Commons. As many will know by now I visited Ayrshire just after the 1998 conference and spoke to a woman who was working at the hotel.
She casually mentioned to me, with no prompting, that she'd served Tony Blair his breakfast one morning during the conference, which strongly suggests he was sleeping at the hotel and didn't just drop by for a celebrity appearance. The rushbridger is a local news paper where it is unaccepteble to live the BBC.
