The end of free content-nice theory but the practice?

If the news media don’t start getting paid for at least a portion of what they produce, some outlets simply aren’t going to be around to provide it.

writes Alan Mutter over at Reflections of a Newsosour.

It is the model that it broken he cries

1.By giving away their content on the web, publishers made it unnecessary for consumers to subscribe to the publications that generated the high advertising revenues that subsidize the cost of producing content.

2.Publishers devalued their once-powerful franchises by letting anyone link freely to their content on the web.

3.The wide availability of free content on the web quickly convinced consumers, who didn’t need much persuading, that content should be free.

But you only have to read the comments left on the blog to realise the immdedaite problem, the most obvious being that news is no longer a scarce commodity and how can you charge for something that can be got for free.
