BBC I-player app due shortly

Good news finally that the BBC is about to launch its own mobile apps.

News, sport and the iPlayer video service are to be made available on i-Phone, Android and BlackBerry smartphones.

The news app will be available during April with the sport app the following month in time for the World cup.

Outside of the UK the service will include advertising, in line with other BBC Worldwide digital services.

Northcliffe launches community app

Northcliffe's community of hyper local sites now have an I-Phone app to provide communities with the ability to plug into local news whilst on the move.

The company launched its network of the community websites last summer and now has 70 local websites covering the South and South West of England.

They cover areas with between 10,000 and 50,000 inhabitants that typically do not have a dedicated local online proposition.

The wait goes on for a BBC i-player app

Oh Dear.

It appears that the company currently working on the I-player I -phone app is not licensed to be doing so

According to Paid Content,Camiloo based in Manchester

“Camiloo is not a licensed distributor of BBC content online or on mobile. The BBC routinely looks for unauthorised usage of our brand across all platforms and when we encounter it we work to resolve the issue,” a spokesperson told paidContent:UK. She would not comment further on whether this means it would bar the app. Rewat.ch would sell for £1.19 but would otherwise be free to use.

Apps coming to your TV soon

2010 will it seems be the year of the tablet and where the distinction between the TV and the computer becomes blurred.

Now it appears that Apps are also moving to the TV.

The FT reports that at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

developers and content providers move their software and services to the big screens of internet-connected TVs.

The Consumer Electronics Association expects 20 per cent of TVs sold in the US this year to be Ethernet-enabled, growing to more than 50 per cent by 2013. That will create a new platform of millions of devices for content providers and application developers.
