When I read this story in the Guardian I have to say I was appalled.
Breifly an American news website ,Pasadenanet.com has decided that it will employ two long distant joiurnalists in India to report on local council meetings which can watch on the web form the comfort of their desks.The rational appearing to be that this was a more cost efective and qualitive way of solving a staffing problem.
" recruiting in India was an obvious solution to his staffing problems. "I've had unfortunate experiences with low-cost articles, Interns and students, are extremely demanding and produce inferior work."
To be able to report on the local community you have to be a part of it,understand its problems,concerns etc.This is simply a way for the paper concerned to save on money and resources.This is not journalism.
