More from Capetown

From yesterday's and this morning's session of the World association of Newspapers forum.

Kenneth W Lowe, President and CEO of The E.W. Scripps Company, announced that there are three words that have brought success to his newspaper company

  1. Fragmentation
  2. Interactivity
  3. Accountability

I would have thought the third is a lesson that all business's must take on board, certainly not perculiar to the media, the second being the embracement of the internet and the first being the number of alternative media types that the consumer can now engage with.

Perhaps more interesting were this morning's remarks by Gavin O'Reilly its president. He painted an upbeat health check for the newspaper industry and refered to the threat posed by the internet as being one of the myths of the newspaper industry.

"The data suggests increased Internet usage tracks increased newspaper usage. There is an increase in total audience (if newspapers are linked to internet), proving yet again, in spite of what the doomsayers say, the complementary nature of print and online”.

Yes in terms of exposure, the internet helps the newspaper industry but the question that propriators must ask is how to translate that exposure into revenue
