She's back

Quite unbelievable that the Daily Express has reverted to having a Diana story on its front pages.

Quoting the results of a new book, the paper reports that

chauffeur Henri Paul was not drunk when their car crashed in a Paris tunnel.
Blood samples used to verify the amount of alcohol he had consumed were taken from another corpse,

Express is in denial again

Unbelievably the Express continues to promote the art of climate change denial.

On its front page this morning,it reports, under the headline, the New Climate change scandal that

The International Panel on Climate Change was forced to admit its key claim that Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035 was lifted from a 1999 magazine article. The report was based on an interview with a little-known Indian scientist who has since said his views were “speculation” and not backed up by research.
and that its chair

is a former railway engineer with a PhD in economics and no formal climate science qualifications.

Express Watch-as it once again denies climate change

Couldn't agree more with Martin Belam

As they say headlines like this and they still say it's the world's greatest newspaper.

Stop global warming-Don't buy the Express

It is about time that I ranted about the Express. This week has been a particularly good example of agenda attempting headlines with climate change denial top of its list.

Both Monday and today's paper have carried front page headlines as the Copenhagen conference is smeared.

Today sees the story that

UK climatologists “probably tampered with Russian-climate data” to produce a report submitted to world leaders at this week’s Copenhagen summit, it is claimed.
The Met Office’s study, which says the first decade of this century has been the warmest on record for 160 years, is being used to trumpet claims that man is causing global warming.

Whereas on Monday we had the news that

CAMPAIGNERS yesterday attempted to pour scorn on “tenuous” global warming theories by issuing a dossier detailing 100 reasons why climate change is natural and not man-made.

along with its printing of the complete 100 reasons

In between the news that

THE scientific consensus that mankind has caused climate change was rocked yesterday as a leading academic called it a “load of hot air underpinned by fraud”.
Professor Ian Plimer condemned the climate change lobby as “climate comrades” keeping the “gravy train” going.

Now here's a thought-let's save the trees by not buying the Express-oops I forgot its sales are already crumbling

Express attacks Xmas schedule

It's that time of year. With 22 days before the festivities the Express this morning devotes its front page to the news that this yeultide we will be getting our usual dose of repeats.

According to the paper, this year’s Christmas television schedule will feature almost 600 hours of repeats.

The glut of tired shows and old films on offer from the four major terrestrial channels will be the largest number of repeats ever shown over the festive fortnight.
adding that

Some of the programmes to be screened this Christmas will already have been seen on television dozens of times.

Loving the right wing press' front pages this morning

According to the Express

BRITAIN was last night frogmarched into a miserable new era of meddling Brussels rule after the final remaining resistance to the hated Lisbon Treaty collapsed.

Whilst the Sun says that

THE last hope of blocking a new European constitution was snuffed out last night - the final kick in the teeth after Labour's betrayal of Britain

Only in the Express

could they manage to combine the scare story of Swine Flu with immigrants on their front page as the paper warns us that

IMMIGRANTS who can barely speak English will be used to man the phones at emergency swine flu call centres, it was revealed yesterday.

The paper adds that

As ministers prepare to launch a virus hotline this week, staff at the centres last night laid bare the chaos behind the preparations.
They said hundreds of people with few English language skills and no medical training will join the 1,500 team taking calls from the public.
Unbelievable

Phew what a scorcher

It is not very often that the Express and the Independent agree on their front page but both are happy that the sun is shining.

For the Express,

SCORCHING sunshine and signs of an upturn in the economy brought the feelgood factor back to Britain this weekend.

Whilst the independent reveals the medical reasons for lapping up the sun

Boosting levels of vitamin D could cut the incidence of breast cancer by a quarter, bowel cancer by a third and it should be offered to the population as part of a public health drive, scientists say.

Sunday Express apologises over Dunblane

It may of taken them two weeks but the Sunday Express has apologised for its Dunblane survivors story.

This is the text from its page five article

THE Scottish Sunday Express has enjoyed a long love affair with the people of our nation.
It is 81 years since the first edition of this great newspaper rolled off the presses in Glasgow.
Over that time, we have established a reputation for crusading journalism built on the twin cornerstones of honesty and integrity.
Scottish Sunday Express readers expect us to shine a light on the wrongs in our society, to expose the crooks, highlight the hypocrites and to give everyone the odd chuckle with the extraordinary stories that ordinary Scots so often have to tell.
We think we are pretty good at all that, and everyone involved in producing this newspaper takes pride in what we publish.
It is also hugely important to us that the Scottish Sunday Express reflects the feelings of the people of Scotland.
On March 8 we got that all wrong.

Our front-page story about the teenage survivors of the Dunblane massacre and their use of social networking websites has caused terrible offence, not only in that town, but across Scotland and around the world.
It is our belief that nobody was misquoted, but the story was undeniably inappropriate. It has upset the young people we named and caused great distress to their parents.
Where possible, we have spoken to the families involved and given them a heartfelt apology. Today we apologise to you, our loyal readers.

As Ode to joy plays

The Sunday Express surpasses itself with its headline this morning.

Amongst all the Olympic celebrations it tells us that

Europe bids to hijack our medals and according to the paper

BRITAIN’S Olympic heroes could be forced to compete under the European flag at London 2012.
A group funded by the European Commission wants to see Team GB replaced with a single European Olympic squad.
As the Queen congratulated the team on Britain’s best Olympic performance in a century, it emerged that our athletes could even be asked to hand over their medals for display in the office of the EU President, a post currently held by French leader Nicolas Sarkozy.

Just imagine President Blair presents Tom Daley with his diving Gold and the Ode to Joy is playing over the loudspeakers

Headline Express and Indie lead with the same story

It is not very often that the Express and the Independent agree on their front page story but this morning they have.

It's all about our falling currency against the Euro, the Express telling us

Families last night faced the grim prospect of having to find an extra £700 to pay for their summer holidays.
The latest blow to budgets already being squeezed by spiralling bills came as the pound plunged to a record low against the euro.
Experts warned that the price of a two-week package holiday for an average family of four could rise by around £450. On top of that, spending on holiday essentials could shoot up by another £250.

Whilst the Independent reports

Tens of millions of British people will experience their own credit crunch on holiday this year as the soaring value of the euro forces them to pay more for everything from the price of a coffee in a Parisian cafe to a hotel room in Barcelona. As currency traders pushed the European single currency to a record high against the pound yesterday, holidaymakers were coming to terms with the fact they now have almost a fifth less spending power on the Continent than a year ago.

Sunday Express wants to ban the hoody

In its campaign to become a serious paper after the Maddy apology, the Sunday Express launches a Middle England cry this morning to ban the hoody

According to its front page

Across the country, violence, vandalism, theft and disorder are an everyday
menace, created by faceless gangs of youths with little fear of ever being
caught.
Streets, trains, buses and shopping centres have become no-go zones
for terrified citizens who have been intimidated by hoodies for too long.

Therefore says the paper

the Sunday Express calls for a crackdown on this terrifying trend and demands
that police officers get tough and order hoods to be removed in public places.
Just as banks ban people from wearing crash helmets on their premises, we
believe high streets and public transport would be safer if hoods were outlawed
and exclusion zones imposed.

Is the Express changing?

Martin Moore thinks that

Reading today's Daily Express is a very odd experience

Why,well besides no mention of Maddy,

neither is there any mention of Diana, or Shannon Matthews' family, or Fiona McKeown. Heather Mills makes a brief appearance on page 13, but only as part of Ann Widdecombe's column. Nor are there any ominous warnings of wild weather. The Islamophobia is even toned down - though the paper could not resist a short piece by Cyril Dixon on p.14 reporting that there will be 'More attending Mosques than Mass by 2020'

Well perhaps the Times( or should I say the Express) is a changing. This morning another serious headline on its front page,a story that is running across this morning's media

Although we also have

The parents of Madeleine McCann are taking part in an ITV documentary to mark the first anniversary of their daughter's disappearance.
Cameras have been following Kate and Gerry McCann since January for the programme, which will feature extended contributions from the couple

I think the jury is still out

The Express covers news and campaigns

Perhaps then the Express has learnt a lesson from the McCann episode. At least if this morning's front page is anything to do by.

The paper reports on the campaign by Gurkhas which culminated in a demonstration outside Parliament yesterday

HUNDREDS of former Gurkha soldiers who fought for Britain are living in poverty on less than £30 a week, the Daily Express reveals today.
The brave warriors, all of whom loyally served the British Army for at least 15 years, are still being refused permission to work, use the NHS or claim benefits as they battle for the right to British citizenship.
reports the paper

At last !!!!!!!!!!!

The McCann's have turned on the Express and not before time.

Guardian media is reporting that

Following the threat of legal action from Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry over what their spokesman Clarence Mitchell described as a series of "wildly and grossly defamatory" articles, the paper, together with its Express Newspapers stablemates the Sunday Express, the Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday, has removed all references to the missing girl from its website search engine.

So if you type McCann into the search engine of the Express or Star you will get nothing. What a shame though that we can't look back at all those ridiculous headlines.

Express shock horror as Southern Britain will soon turn to the Sahara

Rather a strange front page from the Express this morning.Perhaps shamed by the Mail's stance on plastic bags,it devotes its lead story to the news that

MILLIONS face water rationing and soaring bills as experts warned that Britain is heading for a drought crisis.
A growing population and increasing demand for water means that the country is as much at risk as the Sahara Desert.

Typical Express as the inhabitants of Middle England ae told

Overcrowded South-east England is already suffering “severe water stress”, putting it in the same bracket as Saudi Arabia, North Africa, India and eastern Australia. But analysts fear that within 20 years a “parched zone” will spread across the country from the Bristol Channel to the Norfolk coast and north of the Midlands

And watch out

standpipes would become common across large swathes of the nation and shock horror and

The wealthy will be able to insulate themselves to some extent. It will be ordinary families who will be hardest hit

Where do they get their stories from?

Protest against the Express

Media workers are organising a protest against the latest set of racist headlines in the Express.

Journalists in the NUJ chapel at the Daily Express and Daily Star have waged a uniquely brave and consistent campaign against their racist proprietor, the pornographer Richard Desmond. An inspiration to all journalists, time and again they have beaten back the papers' owners and managers.
But now Desmond and editor Peter Hill are using their control over the paper in a sustained campaign to whip up racism once again.

If you are interested the protest will take place at

Thursday February 21
